Presentation, Representation, or Sharing the Findings

With the development of new tools and technology, we got many different ways to share our findings with the audiences. In what way and how our research could survive in the jungle of information age seems another boundaries for us. At the course, I was thinking about the creative and genius way to represent the research, especially in a qualitative sense. This question always leads me to think about the concepts of audience, democracy, equity and accessibility. When we decide to use one method. That method might has its own limitations for readers and audience. For example, I want to develop one apps for the android phones as my thesis. In this sense, I already disregard most of the poor people, or the people who do not want to prefer the technological devices. This case always produces its own dilemmas for us.

The other things is that how I can represent the phenomenon defined by my contributors who can be participants, friends, teachers and others. How I can represent their way of interpretation with the minimum influence. In other words, I can decode their sharing for coding for the representation. I need to read and think more about the clashes of intentions based on Decoding and Coding praxis for representation of findings.

Collaborative approaches in Inquiry Methodology

There are many slightly same terms and concepts for discussing the multiple researcher for inquiring a mutual interest. Team, multiple users, collaboration are used to define the co-operated research and study. In this blog, I am going to employ “collaboration” as a main categorical term for conceptualizing my approach towards the co-operated research. In this week, multiple users and their works with CAQDAS are discussed in terms of theoretical, conceptual and methodological. I looked at many main texts to define and try to articulate the term in qualitative manner.  Collaborative approaches are mainly framed as a comprehensive chapter in Qualitative Research: The essential guide to theory and practice (Savin-Baden & Major, 2013). While reading my course articles, I got many questions about using Qualitative Software and cooperative usage for the research. I can say that I have many concerns and critiques about the team, multiplicity and cooperation.
My first concern is resulted from the differences researchers and participants. I can say that I have positive ideas and thoughts about Action Research. Collaborative inquiry can be seen as action research types in which we can focus on praxis rather than the traditional segregations like participant and researchers. What I wonder about the spirit of collaborative inquiry is that in what ways we can provide the diversity not multiplicity. What I mean that researchers from same fields can be seen as multiple users. Moreover, I would like to ask that how we can delimit the domination of one filed and one types of professionals in conducting the mutual research. In my opinion, most of the CAQDAS tools can provide many ways to overcome these kinds of limitations.
Collaborative approaches are going to proliferate mainly four types which are cooperative, collaborative, appreciative and deliberative (Savin-Baden & Major, 2013, p.259).  These approaches seem to me more helpful to think about the usage of CAQDAS tools since we should think about how we experience them for the sake of our interest, not about to what extend we use them for the sake of our research.

Course on Adobe

I chose this title since I was not good at having a course online. Before our course time, Serife and I tried to decide the place for connecting the adobe. I was insisting on going the room where Y650 is scheduled. My reason was that I always feel unsecure and uncertain about having course at my home. At the end, I persuaded Serife to go the course room. I set on the place where I was usually sitting. I want to share this story because I am going to put myself on the spot. I think that I am not the person who can easily adopt his/her environment. If we take Nvivo and ATLAS.ti as the environment for me and my data, at the beginning I prefer to use old methods like pen and paper. For example, one of my literature review, I printed around 10 paper and I have reading them and taking notes on the paper. After completing them, I am going to code them into ATLAS.ti. I know that when I get used to reading, coding, writing in CAQDAS programs, I will regularly use them. At this point, I feel that my labor can be suddenly disappeared if my computer get any accident. I need to get many ability about technologies and online environment. I believe that these tools encourage me to work more and study more since both of them have many advantages for me and my researches. I see that the nature of data are more ready than me to adopt.

ATLAS.ti

The late note for ATLAS.ti

I have been skimming and scanning the manual of ATLAS.ti after having great seminar from EQR Trainer and Consultant, who was Ricardo B. Contreras. His small online seminar was so informative and helpful even though I had some experiences on ATLAS.ti. After getting seminar, I started asking many critical questions about the changing nature of the data. I really appreciate the developments of digital tools and technologies. To get some sense of the mentality (means of production) of ATLAS.ti as commodity.
I gave some time to myself to read the manual, titled as ATLAS.ti 7 User Manual It is well organized and well-written document in. In this post, I am going to evaluate and give a reflection about it. At the beginning, I would like to underline that internet and software technologies should be questioned and philosophized. As we know that human being has created the world with its culture, nature, nurture and aura. For me, Internet is the result of tendency that human mentality always follow and dream. This divine tendency took legitimacy and de facto information from the sky to surface. For defining that transition, the world witnessed many revolutions, which are called Enlightenment movement (Reformation, Restoration, and Renaissance). Historically, it is obvious that we decided to make us and create us on the world.
The second attempt for getting our consciousness into Being. We have just turned other vertex to feel as we are. This second attempt is more based on creating space with its languages, cultures and productions. In this sense, internet as cyber space has its own means and production relations. At the basic level, all of these technologies need energy, machines (operators), real-creators and users. In this sense, internet and software space becomes the line for co-producing and co-consuming the information as commodity and communication. At the side of the communication, we have already crossed the lines among times, geographies, cultures, and nations. We have already crossed the lines between private and public, night and day, dream and real. At this point, I can claim that we are at the new form of declaration for ethics, aesthetics and authenticity of existence.
As a tool and space, manual gives many useful information to organize, reflect and create our own pathways to make sense of our way of thinking and mentality visible for others. VISE is used as acronym to explain the main goals. VISE stands for Visualization, Integration, Serendipity, and Exploration. These seem to me very related with the ethics, aesthetic and authenticity of our enquiring process. First of all, the information and massage are always intrinsic to escape and reconstruct the meaning. Visualization can be seen as a way of democratizing the process of accessibility of meaning and information. Research should be understandable, accessible and transferrable. Secondly. Integration is the other general principal at the manual. Science as human praxis, forms its own way to accumulate itself and co-construct itself by integrating and integrated by different positions, orientations, paradigms, reflections and data. Third one was used by Ricardo in the online seminar. Serendipity means that researchers and research should be open-minded and ready to have many surprises, which might emerge during the process. For example, the research process is similar to walk in the nature. We as researchers have to keep our eyes open to get many things. The last one is Exploration. I can define it like that there is no difference between the beginning and other points. Exploration means that we keep our curiosity and will to know alive.

When I took my own experience with Transana. I agree with the conceptualizations and experiences that are discussed in terms of the nature of data and the usage of qualitative analysis program. The relations are defined as “fidelity” (Silver & Patashnick, 2011), the applications of qualitative software are the space of “multiplies” for coding, transcribing, analyzing, accessibility and reachability (Woods & Dempster, 2011). The experiences of social researcher  are discussed in terms of the usage of Transana(Brundell, Knight, Tennent, & Naeem, 2008).
These tree articles are well-structured and defined by evaluating Transana. I have been using it too for a while. I still have some small problem with Transana. I really like its organizations as video script. Its main tool bar includes only five general tabs. These are useful and easy to understand for me. My problem emerges from the side which is designed for organizing the data. I have not experienced the multiple transcription and coding by using it so far. I would like to use Transana as the space as multiple coding, transcribing and analyzing.
I believe that the data means certainly more than text. The richer the transcription is, the richer the coding becomes. To understand the actions and meaning, we need wider perception of phenomenon. The process has two faces in this sense. The usage of software only enables us to frame our thought in a meaningful way. In this sense, the transcription, coding and analyzing become more meaningful and comprehensible for the sake of research and construction of meaning.

Nvivo Loading

I really appreciate  having a nice presentation carried out by Cathy Woods. I have some experiences with Nvivo. As it is known that it is expensive to afford. In this note, I will generally evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using Nvivo.

When Cathy defined Nvivo’s layout as excel. I started to feel more comfortable. It is certainly based on the idea of Microsoft applications and tools. Most of us are used to have some familiarity with Microsoft office applications and stuffs. It is really very important advantage to have some familiarity about any digital tools. As it was conceptualized in our previous reading, I felt that I am “technology native” since I know Microsoft and I have been using it for a while.

This is a great advantage to manipulate and articulate the knowledge about Nvivo. Every correlations and relations can be constructed by using the nodes as interpretive anchors to the data and the analysis process. It is also important to have all types of the data in one place. The data might be in the forms like photos, videos, pdf and doc etc. When I think of my personal experiences, I faced with some problem with the video incompatibility. Nvivo does not allow us to work some kinds of video format. In addition to that, it is more insufficient to identify the sentences and words in the scanned documents which are saved as pdf formats. These can be listed as disadvantage of Nvivo. Memos functions are also very great features for doing more analysis every step of research processes.

My most important problem with Nvivo is that I feel more borders, lines and defined relations while coding my data.

Code with 300 emoticons und symbols in MAXQDA

Transcribing is the most difficult process to make data apprehensible and comprehensible for the declarations and fermentation of meaning. For this post, I am going to interpret Saldana’s The Coding Manual (2009) in terms of other ideas.

Who is coded?
Coding can be done by alone, or collaborative. I personally prefer coding data from multiple gaze and lenses to make unsure and create practical / ethical approaches towards not only the nature of data, but also the existence of subjects who are potentially of a relative autonomous as interpreter and coder. The way in which we can create many different correlations for coding the data and creating the codes by the multiple gazes. In spite of the fact that there should be at least two-different approaches to check and frame the meaning for the shared codes, the problem can be grounded itself on the questions for the subjects who are defined as coders. In other words, the every combinations as team could be disregard one of the possibilities in terms of cultural, gender, theoretical, methodological and sociological differences.

How is coded?
As far as I have read and looked at literature, most of the coding strategies are based on Words. The one which I saw in MAXQDA’s web page and I read our course book is based on the emotional symbols, which is defined as emoticode. 300 emoticons and symbols are ready to use for coding the data. This strategy can be very important for crossing the boundaries resulting from the cultural and language differences. Colour types are used for coding too. The problem here is that the binary relations between encoder and decoder enable us to contemplate in a defined area. Sometimes, I feel that these closed relations and symbols.
