Thouhg an arm is broken, its sleeve is englufed in itslef.

In this post, I am going to give some reflection about reflexive blogs, notes, and records. I agree with keeping the notes and feelings recorded in one space and in either one format, or various ways.  What kinds of things seems to me is difficult that there are many conflicts and limits to keep them in a proper way. The ethical concepts which are confidentiality, anonymity, disclosure and informed consent enable us to think critical about what we are doing and conducting.

I know that our readings underline the importance of culture and different culture, but I want to go further about the relation of culture and reflexivity. I grew up in economically poor environment, rural area and heterodox Muslim society. The reason why I shared my background since I want to underline the influences of them on my reflexivity practices. Three of them taught me that ‘the secret’ belonging to them should be kept and in implicit forever. For example, when you see the poverty in any house, you should not tell any ones since it is assumed that the lack of something is not only the personal issue, but also community issue. I am always told that I have to hide the lack of something.

I think that this has culturally transferred to online culture in Turkey. In this sense, the scope of reflexivity is also defined by cultures and sub-culture too.

  1. Ah, yes -- this post invites me to ask, tell us more! Reflexivity and the overlap with culture...powerful. So, does this then mean that there aspect of self that you wouldn't reveal in a reflexivity statement, perhaps?

  2. As you know that I always try to figure out why I am not comfortable in public and in front of the people. Environment in which I grew up discourages me about expressing myself in front of the older people and public. It is always suggested to me that I have to keep my personal thoughts in in my mind and heart until I grow up. This is psychological and biological stages that I have to complete. On the other hand, there are many secrets such as the disabilities of people, lack of something, poverty, cultural identities, religious concerns that I have to be careful when I will make comments and talk about them. The privacy is more than I think. For example, one of my field experiences, I needed to visit one house. Before we entered the house, people tried to hide their poverty by taking their meals away.

  3. This is such an important conversation, Zulfukar. So, as I read it reminds me of the value of some aspects of reflexivity being personal, private, etc. I shared on another blog how I have personally chosen to maintain privacy around my reflexivity musings/blogs. There are aspects of self that I do not make public. Yet, one thing that has challenged me in this regard, is collaborative work. It is an interesting balanced. I'm also really intrigued with your comments in relation to fieldwork and 'hidden' life experiences. This makes resonates with me. I would enjoy hearing more about this in relation to field experiences.
